12) Traditional Dutch food...

I have already expressed my love for stroopwafels but have learned that there is more to dutch food than those delicious caramel cookies. I have a couple of Dutch friends here in Utrecht who I met when they were on exchange in Victoria last year. We meet every once in awhile for dinner. One time we met we made sushi and then the last time we met they made a typical dutch meal called "Stamppot". Basically it is just mashed potatoes and sausage. The potatoes have bacon and Endive mashed in with them and the sausage is just a sausage. You eat it on a plate with a pile of the mash and then the sausage on the side.
Another thing that is very popular here is Vla. I am not sure exactly what it is and to be honest haven't had any but all my friends say it is the best thing. The favourite flavour of this pudding like concoction is stroopwafel of course! It also comes in apple tart flavour. That is another thing I have seen everywhere is apple pie! apple pie and coffee is a usual treat. When my mom was here she learnt about the dutch way of serving coffee. They have really nice coffees and they come with a little treat like a ginger cookie or piece of nougat.
More about dutch food to come!
By the way... I made pumpkin pie for my friends here- everyone loved it! but they (all being Europeans) were very confused how a vegetable could be a dessert.
Eet smakelijk= bon appétit in Dutch
